No Calculator Assessment1. Integer Addition & Subtraction Rules (+, -)
- Addition with Same Signs: Add absolute values and keep the common sign. Example:
(-5) + (-4) = -9. - Addition with Different Signs: Subtract smaller absolute value from larger, and keep the sign of the larger absolute value. Example:
(-27) + 39 = 12. - Subtraction (Add the Opposite): Keep the first number, change subtraction to addition, and change the sign of the second number (Keep-Change-Change). Example:
-30 - (-17) = -30 + 17 = -13or-345 - 61 = -406.
2. Integer Multiplication & Division Rules (ร, รท)
- Same Signs: Result is ALWAYS POSITIVE (+). Example:
(-8) ร (-9) = +72and(-45) รท (-5) = +9. - Different Signs: Result is ALWAYS NEGATIVE (-). Example:
(-4) ร 7 = -28and63 รท (-7) = -9.
3. Two-Color Counters & Zero Pairs
Yellow counters represent positive (+1) and Red counters represent negative (-1). A Zero Pair is formed when 1 positive and 1 negative counter combine to equal 0.
4. Absolute Value Concept |x| & Distance on Number Line
- Absolute Value Definition: The distance a number is from zero on a number line. Distance is ALWAYS non-negative. Example:
|-12| = 12. - Distance Between Two Points: The distance between two points a and b is given by
|a - b|. Example: Distance between -16 and 8 is|-16 - 8| = |-24| = 24. - Outer Negation: If a negative sign is outside absolute value bars, evaluate inside first, then apply outer sign:
-|-8| / 2 = -8 / 2 = -4.
